From under-7 to adult, male and female, players are the heartbeat of the rugby club. Clubs exist to put players on the pitch and all the activities of the club should be focussed on the recruitment and retention players. Ensuring that the social needs of all the players are satisfied, is just as important as ensuring that they are all well coached, well refereed and using good facilities.
All clubs should endeavour to have a player recruitment and retention plan at the heart of their whole club plan. This should logically set out how players are passed between sections and teams and also how the club will actively recruit new players from the local community. These recruitment activities can use the interest generated by high profile events like the RBS 6 Nations and Rugby World Cup to maximise the numbers of players recruited.
This pathway for players through the club should also link to representative rugby and player development structures including CB Schools of Rugby outside the club.
